$700 million dollars in much-needed road repairs and construction projects will soon be underway within the geographic boundaries of the 50th Senate District as part of IDOT’s multi-year construction plan, according to State Senator Steve McClure (R-Springfield). He estimates that the total projects in and around the 50th District probably include over a billion and a half dollars in work that will have a positive impact for the people of the district.
“These projects will help rebuild the network of roads and bridges that people rely on every day to get to work. It is this same transportation network that allows businesses to keep commerce flowing,” said McClure. “This is what we can achieve when we come together in a bipartisan way to do what’s right for the people of this state.”
The projects are part of the Illinois Department of Transportation’s (IDOT) multi-year road plan. Senator McClure joined with a bipartisan group of legislative colleagues to announce the projects at a press conference at IDOT’s headquarters in Springfield. In total, the plan includes more than $691 million in funding for projects in the 50th Senate District, which encompasses all or parts of 9 counties. The construction will cover an estimated 181.66 miles of roads through 129 projects.
Some of the major projects include $30.5 million for MacArthur Boulevard improvements in Springfield, $50.6 million for South 6th Street improvements in Springfield, $160 million for the Joe Page Bridge in Greene and Calhoun Counties, $86 million for the Florence Bridge in Scott and Pike Counties, $12.3 million for I-72 improvements in Pike County, more than $80 million for US Route 67 through Cass, Greene, Jersey, Morgan, and Scott Counties (including the Delhi bypass), $4.3 million for Illinois Route 99 through Brown and Pike Counties, $4.6 million for Illinois Routes 111 and 267 through Morgan and Macoupin Counties, in addition to other significant projects on the numerous state and federal roads throughout the district.
Statewide, over $23.5 billion in road and bridge repair and construction projects are planned from 2020-2025, covering over 4,200 miles of roads and nearly 700 bridges. These include numerous major projects all around the geographic boundaries of the 50th District, like the $122 million dollar Springfield rail project, which was a priority for Senator McClure. The plan also includes $714 million in much-needed projects in Madison County, which is a major transportation corridor for the region.
“These projects are going to have a major impact on people throughout Illinois and grow new jobs immediately,” said Senator McClure. “This is a good example of what we can accomplish when legislators work together for the betterment of the people they serve.”
The construction programs are funded through the recently passed bipartisan Rebuild Illinois capital construction plan, which Senator McClure voted for, plus existing funds dedicated to road construction.
