Senate Week in Review: May 20-24th

Senator McClure had the privilege last week of meeting with Girl Scout Troop #6195 and middle school green team from Pleasant Plains. They are very involved in the community and civic-minded as well. Some of their projects include sending cookies to our troops, greeting Honor Flight participants, and cleaning up the environment. They asked some very good questions, and I am confident that they will continue to be positive role models for their peers.

Also, congratulations to Colin Dobson on the publication of A Guide to Finding Birds Along the Illinois River Flyway, an informative book to teach anyone the basics of birdwatching in the Midwest. Colin is a senior at Routt Catholic High School and will graduate this year. He plans to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

As the Minority Spokesperson for the Higher Education Committee, I was a guest on Illinois Lawmakers along with Chairperson Pat McGuire. There is bipartisan support for our state’s public universities and community colleges, and we must work to get them funding. We also need to eliminate unnecessary costs and do what is needed in order to recruit more students. You can view the full interview at http://illinoislawmakers.org/.

On May 14, Senate Republican lawmakers joined firefighters and their families from around Illinois who traveled to Springfield to participate in the 26th Annual Fallen Firefighter Memorial and Firefighting Medal of Honor Awards Ceremony. The ceremony, which takes place every year in May, honors those who have made the supreme sacrifice, and those who have demonstrated extraordinary acts of bravery and heroism to protect fellow firefighters and civilians.
