Senator McClure Appointed to Top Republican Spot on Criminal Law Committee

State Senator Steve McClure (R-Springfield), a former prosecutor, has been appointed to the top GOP spot on the Criminal Law Committee.

“It’s an honor to have a leading role in the process of reviewing changes to our state’s criminal justice system,” said Senator McClure. “This position will allow me to utilize knowledge and experience gained as a former assistant state’s attorney to voice the concerns of victims, law enforcement, and prosecutors to combat the horrendous level of crime our state is currently experiencing.”

Before he was elected as the State Senator for the 50th District, McClure served as an assistant state’s attorney in the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office, leading the office’s Juvenile Division. As a juvenile prosecutor, he was dedicated to protecting children from abusive parents, rehabilitating delinquent youth, and was unwavering on providing assistance to children with chronic absences. Later, he worked in the Felony Division, where he prosecuted drug dealers, burglars, violent criminals, gang members, and perpetual thieves. He also focused on prosecuting those who stole from, and took financial advantage of, senior citizens.

“Following a year where we saw near-record levels of crime in many areas, we need to focus more than ever on protecting the safety of our communities,” said McClure. “I look forward to working with my colleagues to make sure we do everything we can to protect the people of Illinois.”

In addition to his role as the ranking Republican on the Criminal Law Committee, McClure has also been assigned to the Agriculture, Energy & Public Utilities, Executive Appointments, Local Government, and Transportation committees.
